Why Dogs Jump

Dogs jump for many reasons:

- To say hello. We use facial expression and sounds that come from above most dogs.

- Physical contact. Many dogs will body slam or attach a paw as they jump. This type of dog craves body contact.

- Lack of exercise. Even the most mild mannered dog, if not given enough stimulation, can jump and behave wild.

- It's just good fun!

What to do..........

#1 Don't panic this seems to make things worse. Please read Name Game Article. Attention is so important.

#2 Calmly place your dog on leash as you arrive home there should be a leash by the door. Step on the leash this leaves your hands free to give hand signal for sit or down and also to reward with cookies from your pocket. Crouch down towards your dog and say hello CALMLY. Stand up keeping you foot stepping on the leash and refocus your dog perhaps towards his toy basket.

#3 When company comes place your dog on leash and start working him before company is expected this can be set up in a mock situation as well. Step on the leash and reward good behavior. Don't ewww and awww over your dog it only confuses him and may over stimulate him again.

#4 Exercise your dog Daily! I can't stress this enough. Imagine lying around all day sleeping and when the people you love walk in the door they are yelling things you don't understand and pushing you away.

#5 Some dog's are bothered by you turning away from them, this doesn't work for most but why not give it a shot.

#6 I am going to stress in the articles that training isn't about finding a magic answer it's about getting to know your dog and learning to communicate so that you have a common language.
