Training Tidbits - Clicker Training

The Clicker is a communication tool, and you use it to let your dog know that he responded correctly to your instructions.

I recommend that you use it as a secondary tool, and use food or toys as the primary way to condition your dog's behavior. In the end, it's food and toys that he really wants!

You can pair the clicker with the primary tool regularly until your dog reacts the same way to the clicker as he does to his favorite reward.

Getting Started...

To begin using the clicker, take your dog to a place where neither of you will be distracted. Make sure you have your treats in your hand before you begin.

1. Give your dog a command.

2. Click immediately, and pause long enough to say your name.

3. Give your dog a treat!

4. Repeat above the steps about 20 times.

Of course, if your dog does not obey your instructions, begin again.

You only want to use the clicker to reinforce good behavior. The clicker will then become associated with positive reinforcement, and becomes a positive signal to the dog.

Keep in Mind... Make sure you click and pause before you make any movement or show any sign of giving the treat. When you have a clicker-wise dog, you can use it to help you teach new behaviors and reinforce good behavior. Once you and your dog get the hang of it, you should start to raise your standards.

Start asking for two or more repetitions of behavior, before clicking and treating. Do not point the clicker at your dog, as it is not a remote control.

Do not use clicker to illicit behavior.

If your dog is afraid of the clicker, mute the sound or click in another room until dog is no longer bothered by it.
